Answering Machine Messages

Friday, April 25th, 2008

Greetings!

Yes, I am back this week from the jaws of the flu and allergies.

In my attempt to catch up, I have been making numerous calls and decided it was time to discuss answering machine messages. I have heard just about everything on people’s machines and most were less than impressive. Talk about unprofessional and certainly not enhancing one’s image, these were it!

One message was recorded as a person was driving and you could hear the wind blowing, the trucks passing by, and the radio in the background. The voice was muffled and at times you could not understand what the individual was saying.

Several examples of messages included:
Ø      Only stating a person’s first name
Ø      Smacking gum while talking
Ø      Speaking so rapidly you could not understand the message
Ø      So long of a message I became bored….but had to continue to listen to see just how long it was going to be!
Ø      Musical messages
Ø      Messages delivered by a famous person’s voice

And the list could continue. What do answering machine messages say about our image? The answer is quite a bit.

Please keep in mind that today initial communication with someone may be conducted via answering machines. In some cases you may carry on a “conversation” via machines long before a personal interaction. So keep your message clear, concise and presented in a professional manner. State your complete name, company name if appropriate, and ask the caller to leave a message. Saying that you have reached an answering machine is not necessary as most everyone understands this method of communication. If possible, state when a message may be received and returned.

Your answering machine message is a representation of you and your image, let it speak positively about you.

What is your message? What is the best or worst message you have heard?

Have a great weekend,

Let’s Talk a Minute, signed, your shoes

Friday, April 11th, 2008

Greetings,

Here is the way we see things….

  • You expect us to coordinate with the outfits you wear
  • You want us not to hurt your feet in any way
  • Women want us to make their feet appear more petite
  • You want us to attract compliments for you
  • You would love for us to find our own way back into the closet
  • You want us to last a long time

However, you do not give us the time of day. We do not receive any one-on-one time with you. When was the last time you polished us or even wiped us off?

We can tell you it has been a long time. We have so much dirt and grime on us that we cannot see our faces anymore. Several of us have laces that are all ripped and worn, how tacky is that?

We scandals are now poised to come out of the back of the closet for spring and on into the summer weather, and would love to be cleaned up. Remember we have been gathering dust all winter long.

On behalf of all the shoes in your closet, please take some time with us. We would love to be polished, cleaned, and wiped off so we can continue to enhance and complement your image.

Signed, your shoes.

P. S. Nyda will return next week.

Change….and our image

Friday, April 4th, 2008

Greetings!

Unexpected change is law it seems. The recent economy is affecting us in a variety of ways. We read in the newspapers and hear on television that jobs are being lost, companies are not hiring or laying off, projects are put on hold, homes are in foreclosure, debt is rising, and the cheese in the refrigerator is getting moldy. Yes, change is law is seems.

Change can also be empowering, challenging and an invisible gift. Something good comes out of change most times, and we have to learn to embrace it as a part of our life. You must change your thoughts and actions.

How we react to change has an impact on our image. We see people complain, blame and hide from change…not a pretty sight! Here are six ways to embrace change and maintain, even enhance your image:

  1. Accept responsibility for your past…in the business world, the definition of insanity is doing what you have always done, and expecting different results. Let go of any negatives from the past.
  2. Accept responsibility for your actions. Erase “blame” out of your vocabulary. Blame is a negative energy and removing it will leave room only for the positive. When you are positive you will be better able to appreciate the good things you have, the good choices you make, and you will be able to look forward to the future with enthusiasm, knowing you are in charge of your future.
  3. Develop a positive connection to your future. It is not too late. The attitude that it is never to late is an example that whatever you decide to do, the important thing is “to decide” and “do” something. There is no expiration date for taking action.
  4. Each new day is a learning experience. Each new day is a present or gift; embrace it with a positive mindset.
  5. Look at change as building blocks and begin with one or two changes and build as you go along.
  6. Allow yourself time to be grateful because if we do this, it takes our mind off the negatives and what we do not have.

What are five things for which you are grateful? Just thinking about them probably made you smile…and that is always a positive impact on your image.

Keep change coming!
