Time for a Six Month Checkup…of your image that is!

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Greetings!

Now is a great time to conduct a six month checkup of your image. We are half way through the year, play the role of the “doctor” and analyze your image.

The checkup begins by reviewing the goals you set forth to accomplish in 2008. The goals may have included going back to school to finish your degree, obtain an advanced degree, or improve your skills; drop some of those extra pounds, start an exercise program, take up a hobby, grow out your hair…the list could go on and on.

Answer the question of “How are you doing?” Be specific and answer the when, why, and how for each goal. Be honest with your assessments. If you are not where you want to be, why not and what must be done to get you back on track? If you are on track, pat yourself on the back, you deserve it!

Study your personal vision and mission statements and make sure they are still meaningful. If you do not have personal statements, now is the time to develop them. Also recite your 30 second commercial to see if it still represents you, who you are and what you do in life. Assess the reactions from people with whom you interact and make adjustments if necessary. As we know, your 30 second commercial is always an evolving process as we are always changing as we journey through life.

Next, take a snapshot of you dressed in your daily attire to go to your work. Maybe take a series of them over a two week period. Study them to see if you are projecting the image you want. Remember it is up to you to manage the impressions you make. Write down what you see as positive or professional and what you see as negative image aspects. Study your answers and state 2-3 ways that you will continue or enhance the positive aspects and the same for the negative aspects you listed. Make any adjustments and implement them for several weeks, then take snapshots of you again and check them for improvements. Reward yourself for any successes noted by treating yourself to a new piece of clothing, your favorite lunch or dinner, a book, CD or DVD.

Okay, doc, how did do with your check up? Please share the experience with us; we would love to hear about it.

Enjoy the weekend and by the way, there will be no blogs in July as I am traveling out of state each weekend to speak at conferences or conduct client projects. Enjoy July and I will be back Friday August 1st

Time for Motivation!

Friday, June 20th, 2008

Greetings!

This is the time for motivation!

Employees are experiencing all types of emotions lately….frustration, fear, anger, uncertainty, and excitement. Companies in general are tightening up the purse strings, exploring ways to cut expenses as revenues are under stress, and trying to stay ahead of the fast approaching ball of the economy.

Now is the time for you as a business owner, manager, supervisor, boss to motivate your employees and clients. You want to keep the cream of the crop employees and clients so you must make them feel important to the success of the company.

I was in Louisville Kentucky speaking at a conference this past weekend and while having breakfast Sunday I watched television. A show titled “Business Focus” featured a company that simply sent out an email to its employees to find out what they were thinking and feeling about the economy and how it was affecting them. At first, that sounded pretty silly, asking employees an open ended question, talk about opening Pandora’s Box!

However, it served as quite the motivating step. The owner was quite taken back with the responses that he received via email. The employees opened up and said that some would be looking for work closer to home if the gas prices continued rising. They would not be able to afford driving. So he did something different, thought outside the box if you will. He is paying anything above $2.50 a gallon to his employees. His response is that it will cost more to replace and train new employees than the cost of gas. Now that is motivation!

While you may not have this option, you do have many others to motivate your employees. Drop by branches, departments etc. and give everyone a beach ball since it is summer now; treat them to a boxed lunch brought to their location, let them select a day to work from home, or implement a president’s breakfast and have them join you to hear what is going on in their lives. These are only a few suggestions….by the way, a simple thank you is also motivation. These same ideas can be used for your clients. Think outside the box….The point is to tell them they are important and communicate, communicate, communicate!

What are you doing or experiencing as a way to motivate? Please let us know so we can gain more ideas.

Have a great weekend!

How to Enhance Image and Brand through Electronic Media

Friday, June 6th, 2008

Greetings!

This past Tuesday I was the keynote lunch speaker at Hodges University in Ft. Myers for the Southwest Chapter of the Public Relations Association. The conference focused on the various applications of electronic media to create a “buzz” about your company or organization. The speakers provided ways to incorporate electronic media, but as most of you know I am always thinking of how various applications affect image and brand.

I delivered to the group my five key points. These points will help provide a foundation from which to ensure the use of electronic media positively enhances image and brand. The following is a brief insight into the key points.

Please give your take on the subject and how have you seen electronic media used effectively and ineffectively.

#1
The “cornerstone” of the master marketing plan…your defined and desired image and brand….does the “buzz” fit?

First take a minute and think about the image and brand of your company or organization. You should be able to do so in three sentences or less. As you analyze any electronic media, determine if the “buzz” it may create is a fit within the master plan.

 #2
The back room functions eventually reach the client…are they informed?

Use electronic media to ensure the back room operations and all employees know of the marketing campaigns, press releases, and all efforts. Nothing can take the “bang” of the “buzz” faster than an employee not knowing about the campaign and making a negative comment to the customer or prospect that “they never tell us anything”.

Use video technology to help communicate effectively and efficiently what marketing and public relations is doing to enhance the image and brand of the company or organization. This technology allows key personnel to be seen and heard and shows the passion they have about the success of the company AND the role each employee plays.

#3
How will this electric media benefit my business and my clients? This is the question to answer!

Start with answering the question of how this media will benefit the master plan, then for each point you make, identify three benefits. If you can do this, then move forward; if not, return to the drawing board. Maybe the time is not right for this particular media. Ask the same question of how it will benefit the company and how it will benefit the client.

#4
Can you stand the “heat of the kitchen”? What if the implementation of electric media is successful?

Remember the commercial where the employees gathered around the laptop and watched as their product had just been launched on the web? They longingly looked for a click or a “buy”. At last, the first click, then 15, 50, 100, 1000 and it just kept going, faster and faster. At that point, they all begin to stand up slowly and look at each other. You knew just what they were thinking….”oh my, what have we done?”

And one thing that electronic media can do that a direct mail campaign cannot is have your message sent to others. Your message may be forwarded to someone’s friends, family and entire database!

Make sure that you are ready to take the heat of the kitchen if your launch or campaign is successful.

#5

Can the use of this media create ICE (Interest, Connection, Excitement)?

How many of you have noticed an ice sculpture at a corporate dinner or on a cruise?  I had several opportunities to observe many people as they watched in wonder the details of the ice sculptures. The sculptures brought interest and attention to the food, seemed to make the food taste better, and created an atmosphere for people to engage in conversation. Isn’t that what you want your marketing and public relations efforts to do? Of course!

So determine how each electronic media is going to create ICE. The target audience of the campaign should react with interest, it should catch their attention. There should be a connection between your target audience and the product or service you are offering, and they should react with excitement!

Electronic media is here to stay and will continue to change the ways we communicate with our clients, prospects, employees and the public. Use electronic media to your advantage!

Have a great weekend!
